Azhagar Kovil

Nestled in the Alagar Hills about 21 km from Madurai, Azhagar Kovil — formally known as Kallazhagar Temple — is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Surrounded by lush forest and rocky hills, the journey to the temple is as beautiful as the destination.

The presiding deity, Kallazhagar (the beautiful one of the hills), is celebrated in the ancient Nalayira Divya Prabandham hymns. During the Chithirai festival, the deity is ceremonially taken to the Vaigai river in a grand procession through Madurai.
